Your heart is in the right place, but your hair is not. You managed to look different than your parents, but you and your aunt share the same sweet tooth. Your older brother has not changed in years, but somehow looks exactly like your dad. You are great with children, but you wonder whether they will really appreciate your fashion sense. You uphold family traditions, but traditions can change from generation to generation. You have an uncle with a wild beard, a grandma with the most daring make-up-style, and a wild bunch of friends whose exploits would not be suitable for a sitcom. Family and friends are the most wonderful source of inspiration. You just never know what they will come up with! They’re the people we love, the people we trust and confide in, the people we identify with. But there’s something else about family that isn’t often spoken about, because, well, it’s not always comfortable to admit. So, let’s just put it out there—family is awkward. That’s right. When a group of people with the same last name and different personalities are forced to spend most of their lives together, plenty of uncomfortable moments are sure to follow. And when a camera is there to capture one of those moments, an awkward family photo is born. ESMoA was excited to present AwkwardFamilyPhotos from February 15 to April 28, 2018. Experience 33: AWKWARD showed the wonderful collection creators Mike Bender and Doug Chernack continue to grow with the help of families from all over. Art is a state of mind and when you decide to expose yourself to awkwardness you will soon discover that perfection is totally overrated. It is time to smile and see how family portraits have a true right to stay in art histories priority list. The homestyle setting in ESMoA’s gallery provided insight on how to keep your own family memories alive with fun.
